What is certification? Is it really required?

Today, many egg brands use words like organic, free-range, pasture-raised, natural or farm fresh. But the problem is simple: any brand can make a claim. Not every brand can prove it.

Producing truly organic or pasture-raised eggs is not easy. It is expensive, labour-intensive and difficult to manage.

Certification helps verify whether a brand is actually following the standards it claims to follow. It is not just a logo on the pack. It is a system of checks, audits, inspections and accountability.

What Does Certification Involve?

A genuine certification system usually includes:

  • Following clearly defined production standards
  • Regular farm audits and inspections
  • Verification by independent third-party agencies
  • On-site checking of documents, feed, farm practices, bird welfare, traceability, and production methods
  • Annual inspections, including announced and surprise checks
